    McMansion-at-night-messed-with

Land of Excess can’t resist posting this picture by our founder that we ran across while searching through our archive. This nice mess is made from a more normal-looking picture she  took in 2000 in Great Falls, VA. featuring a house in the then-new development being built down the road from her family’s house. The un-messed with picture was from the body of work “Private Property.”

Here is the text from the original picture: “The second house built by the Gulick Group in their subdivision development called ‘Riverbend’ in a field at the corner of River Bend Road and Georgetown Pike. Great Falls, Virginia. July 2002.”

Land of Excess thinks today that it is appropriate to look at real estate listings from Marco Island, Florida.   We had planned to feature a sunny pool view or something to give our chilly mid-Atlantic spirits a lift.  But we were immediately struck by this photo of a front hall with a grand piano, behind which is a hotel-auction style ‘painting’ or possibly ‘giclee’ of a grand piano positioned in nearly the same way.  We would throw some theory-talk around about this photo, but feel it best to leave that to our reader(s).  All yours for $7,500,000 with 5 bedrooms, 5 full and 2 partial baths. Garaging unspecified.

Land of Excess is fascinated by this big ole place at 19124 Jerusalem Road, Poolesville, MD.  30 miles from the White House, claims an old document.  Much of the structure dates back to 1812, built with bricks made on location.  Parts were torn down in 1938 and rebuilt.  We understand it used to be called “Aix La Chapelle.”  It is being offered now for $2,500,000 with 159 acres, 9 bedrooms, 5 full and 1 partial bath, and garaging for 2.  There are a lot of barns and outbuildings, and 3 tenant houses,  orchards, cropland, ponds, and a swimming pool.  The listing text cautions:  “This property is being sold ‘as is, where is’.”  We are wondering if a huge road project is going in next door or something.

Today, Land of Excess pays enthusiastic tribute to the newly-discovered-by-us tumblr page “F— Your Noguchi Coffee Table”.  Our tribute will take the form of one of the features of that page, “Super Combo Sunday” but we will call it “Super Combo Wednesday”:   F— your life imperative quote from Jim Rohn, your Gator mascots, your excercise equipment, and your framed fun/cheesy picture.  F— your ridiculous ‘magnificent’ residential dwelling with its 5 full and 1 partial bath and 2 car garage and 5 bedrooms.  F— the ‘theater room’ and fuck the ‘double staircase’.  F— $1,799,000. And f— Potomac, MD.

Land of Excess has spent a few minutes getting all warm and cozy with this upper level floorplan for a residential dwelling in McLean, VA.   Most striking to us is the placement of the Laundry Room.  It is fantastic that it is on the bedroom level where it should be for a contemporary family that is not using copious linens for dining, which would require the laundry to be nearer dining/kitchen facilities.  But we are surprised to discover that this Laundry Room is snugged in proprietarily behind the more intimate areas of the 924 square foot Master Suite such that those not accommodated in the Master Suite nevertheless have to walk through its bedroom area, its vanity dressing area, and one of its 2 Walk-In Closets in order to reach the washer and dryer.  Is this a new form of family togetherness?  Or a suggestion that the occupants of this 5 bedroom, 6 full and 1 partial bath and 4 car garage domicile offered at $1,749,900 might be childless, or even single?

    5702-Fern-Hill-front-

Here at Land of Excess, we sometimes run across houses that we find really interesting and dare we say admirable.  Today we can’t resist featuring this place, in McLean, VA, built on land that we think was once part of Merrywood, where Jacqueline Beauvoir grew up. We like this bunker-covered-with-camouflage look. The vines are just scrumptious. This area is considered the “Gold Coast” of McLean.  You may have this Potomac River waterfront residence on 5 acres for only $9,995,000 with 4 bedrooms, 5 full and 1 partial baths, and garaging for 2.

    15151-Riding-Club-living-room

Land of Excess puzzles over this photo featuring the back of something resembling a couch.  We see that the view from this thing is of a painting that on close examination reveals itself to be a late 19th century ballroom dance scene.  The caption for this photo is “Living Room w/View to Pool”.   We are exhausted at  the mental effort required to reconcile all this.  We wonder if the occupants feel this way too.  But luckily they can escape to the 10 wooded acres that accompany this residential dwelling in Haymarket, VA.  Listed at $1,900,000 with 4 bedrooms, 6 full and 2 partial baths, and garaging for 4.

What would we wear on a visit to the occupants of this place?  Would there be some kind of faux royalty in a receiving line?  And would we be permitted to enter through these gilded gates in our 23 year old car? Land of Excess can’t quite manage the mental gymnastics here.   All yours in Vienna, VA for $2,499,000 with 5 bedrooms, 5 full and 2 partial baths, and garaging for 3 grand transports.

We just don’t know what to make of this “Majestic Curb Appeal” with “Simple Yet Elegant Architectural Details Throughout”.  The deepest issue driving our Land of Excess enterprise is our fear that whoever thinks this place is swell must think a lot of other things and ideas that have no basis in social or political or economic or historical reality are swell too.  Anyway, all yours in Bethesda, MD for $5,295,000 with 7 full and 2 partial baths and 6 bedrooms and garaging for 4.

Land of Excess is so confused by this house.  Do we need new glasses?  We keep trying to look at it and not see that it is just a a box with various architectural ideas tacked onto the sides and top.  We suppose that we are glad that the person who designed this hulking mashup decided to make very clear the distinction between the automobile entry and the people entry, but even so the persons featured in the illustration seem not quite sure.  This spec dwelling on Old Dominion Drive in McLean, VA is all yours for $2,175,000 with garaging for 3, 6 bedrooms, and 6 full and 1 partial bath.
